Description
1 WWI Patton Cavalry Sword available. This fine Patton sword would make an important addition to any collection.
The Patton sword, officially designated as the Model 1913 Cavalry Saber, is a heavy-cavalry sword designed by then-Lieutenant (later General) George S. Patton Jr. in 1913. Intended strictly as a thrusting weapon for cavalry charges, it is the last sword ever issued to the United States Cavalry.
Key Design & Specifications
Unlike the curved, single-edged slashing sabers previously used by the U.S. Army, the Patton saber was modeled after the straight thrusting swords of the French and British armies.Blade: Straight, double-edged, and highly tapered, with a deep blood groove running down both sides. It measures roughly 35.25 inches in length, and the whole weapon weighs around 2 lbs 13 oz.
Hilt:
Features an enlarged, basket-shaped sheet-steel handguard to protect the knuckles, and a hard, black rubber or plastic pistol-style grip. The grip includes a thumb-rest to ensure the blade’s edge is properly oriented for a thrust.Scabbard: Made of hickory wood, covered in rawhide, and finished with waterproof olive drab canvas.Combat PhilosophyPatton, a master swordsman and an Olympic fencer, designed the weapon for pure offense. He developed a brutal fencing system that avoided direct parries, instead teaching troopers to set aside an opponent’s sword with a forceful, forward thrust. Because the sword was designed strictly for stabbing and lunging, it was rarely sharpened for slashing.
History & Legacy:
Though manufactured by the tens of thousands at the Springfield Armory starting in 1913, the Patton sword never saw actual combat. By the time U.S. troops deployed in World War I, trench warfare and modern firearms had rendered traditional cavalry charges obsolete. Horsemen were forced to dismount and fight on foot. The cavalry saber was officially phased out by the U.S. Army in 1941. Many of the surviving Patton swords were subsequently cut up and fashioned into fighting knives or “drop knives” for soldiers and resistance fighters during World War II.

This WWI Patton Cavalry sword is in excellent condition.
