Description

1 antique Japanese jingasa/kasa available. This rare hat would make an important addition to any collection.

This hat is made of rattan, and is lacquered. The front is adorned with the 3-5-3 kiri. The back has kanji written in red lacquer.

This type of hat (kasa) is traditionally worn by ascetic monks, pilgrims, or attendants during holy mountain expeditions (Shugendō rituals). The inscription indicates that the wearer was a designated official attendant accompanying the Head Priest of the Sanbō-in Temple during one of these ceremonial pilgrimages or formal processions.

This kasa measures 16 1/2″ in diameter.

CONDITION:

There is some minor lacquer separation around the edges on the underside of this kasa. The liner is in exceptional condition.
