Description

This desirable 1968 Vietnam War–period Gerber Mark II fighting knife represents a rare opportunity for serious collectors. Because of its outstanding condition and correct features, it would make an important addition to any advanced edged-weapon collection.

This Gerber carries serial number “006185.” It measures 11 7/8″ overall, and the blade measures 6 3/4″.

Additionally, the sheath retains the correct 2-line Gerber stamp and the proper right-hand keeper strap, further confirming its authenticity.

In 1968, Gerber produced approximately 4,900 knives and followed a strictly sequential numeric serial number system.

Serial Number Range: Most 1968 models fall between 005001 and 009900. However, some knives in the 9525–9989 range show stamping errors that omit the leading two zeros.

Blade Design: The knife features a 6.5-inch wasp-waisted, double-edged spear point blade that narrows near the guard. Unlike later versions, the 1968 models generally lack the serrations that Gerber later added when marketing the knife as a “survival” tool.

Handle Transition: Notably, 1968 marked a transitional year for Gerber. Early in the production run, the company applied the rough “Cat’s Tongue” stainless steel spray finish (seen on serial numbers up to approximately 008584). Later that year, Gerber switched to a brown or gray Armorhide epoxy coating.

Blade Cant: Early production models, including many from 1968, often feature a 5-degree offset cant between the blade and handle. Designers incorporated this feature to keep the knife closer to the body when worn and to enhance penetration performance.

CONDITION:

Overall, this 1968 Vietnam War–period Gerber Mark II remains in exceptional condition. The previous owner maintained the blade’s edge with a sharpening stone, and it presents well. Likewise, the scabbard remains in exceptional condition.
