This 3-section lacquer-work inro features a carp and water plant motif. The front side features a mother-of-pearl inlay.
An inro is a small, portable, compartmentalized case worn by men during the Edo period (1615-1868). Traditional Japanese robes (kimono) do not have pockets. Items like this were suspended from the waist sash (obi). Inro were originally used to carry identity seals and medicines.
