Description

This U.S. WWII Theater fighting knife represents a striking example of wartime ingenuity. Because of its handcrafted character and battlefield origins, this desirable combat knife would make an important addition to any serious military collection.

Originally, a craftsman created this WW2 theater fighting knife from a cut-down sword. As a result, the blade retains two prominent fullers (blade grooves), which enhance both its strength and visual appeal. When we acquired the knife, it did not include a scabbard.

The blade measures 11″ in length, and the knife measures 16 11/16″ overall, giving it an impressive and substantial presence.

Unlike standard-issue military knives, servicemen or skilled tradesmen typically handmade theater fighting knives within a specific theater of operations. Consequently, each example reflects the materials, tools, and combat conditions available at the time.

Characteristics and Materials

In many ways, theater knives represent trench art applied to weaponry. Makers frequently relied on salvaged materials from downed aircraft or other military equipment to construct these personalized fighting tools.

Handles: Most notably, craftsmen often built stacked washer handles using clear Plexiglas (commonly taken from aircraft canopies), along with aluminum, brass, colored plastics, or vulcanized fiber. This approach created both durability and a distinctive layered appearance.

Blades: In addition, many makers repurposed existing steel by reshaping broken or captured bayonets, old files, leaf springs, or, as in this example, cut-down swords. As a result, each knife carries its own unique character and wartime story.

CONDITION:

Overall, this U.S. WWII Theater fighting knife remains in excellent condition and presents exceptionally well for a handmade wartime piece.
