Description
This rare World War II 2nd Pattern Fairbairn Beaded & Ribbed commando knife represents an exceptional collector’s piece. Because of its scarcity and distinctive configuration, it would make an important addition to any serious edged-weapon collection.
This desirable Fairbairn-Sykes knife bears the stamp “ENGLAND.” In addition, the handle displays the British broad arrow along with the number “6.” The top of the scabbard also carries the “ENGLAND” stamp, further supporting its period authenticity.
The knife measures 11 7/8″ overall, and the blade measures 6 13/16″.
During World War II, U.S. troops staging in Britain frequently purchased 2nd Pattern Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knives as they prepared for the D-Day invasion. Consequently, many of these knives saw service with Allied personnel operating in the European Theater.
The “Beaded and Ribbed” Fairbairn-Sykes knife represents a rare variation of the iconic British Commando dagger.
Key Features
Handle Design: Most notably, the grip features alternating raised ribs and small beaded segments, which create its distinctive appearance and secure feel.
Construction: Manufacturers typically cast the original handles in brass and then applied a darkened or blackened finish.
Markings: While many original examples remain unmarked on the blade and guard, some display a War Department broad arrow or a stamped number (such as “^1” or “^12”) near the guard.
Historical Context
Rarity: Importantly, this pattern appears far less frequently than the standard Second or Third Pattern knives, which significantly increases its desirability among collectors.
Manufacturers: Although historians have not confirmed the exact manufacturer of the Beaded & Ribbed variant, some experts suggest that William Rodgers of Sheffield may have produced them.
Users: Elite Allied units, including British Commandos and the SAS, carried these knives. In many cases, soldiers acquired them through private purchase or specialized military supply channels.
CONDITION:
Overall, this WW2 2nd Pattern Fairbairn Beaded & Ribbed commando knife remains in excellent condition. One side of the blade shows mild oxidation; however, the knife retains strong visual appeal. Additionally, the nylon keeper strap on the sheath has broken, which commonly occurs on surviving WW2 Fairbairn sheaths.
