Description

This antique U.S. World War II OSS Philippines drop knife represents a scarce and highly desirable wartime piece. Because of its unique construction and special-operations association, it would make an important addition to any advanced military collection.

The knife measures 14 1/8″ overall, and the distinctive 3-sided blade measures 9″. In addition, it retains its original metal scabbard. Notably, the knife features a pronounced skull-crusher pommel, which enhances both its visual impact and combat utility.

Collectors commonly refer to this piece as an “OSS Philippines drop knife.” During World War II, makers often constructed these knives from repurposed .45-70 Springfield triangular bayonets or cut-down Patton cavalry swords. As a result, many examples display robust, battlefield-ready characteristics.

Design: Craftsmen typically reshaped surplus military blades into long, triangular fighting blades suited for close combat.

Handle: They frequently fitted these knives with simple, improvised handles made from rubber tubing, which provided durability and a secure grip under harsh field conditions.

Usage Claim: According to long-standing accounts, the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) allegedly supplied or dropped similar knives to Allied guerrilla fighters operating in the Philippines. Consequently, collectors associate these knives with behind-enemy-lines operations.

Collector Status: Today, militaria collectors actively seek these knives. Therefore, they regularly appear at major auctions and often command strong prices.

CONDITION:

Overall, this original U.S. knife and its accompanying scabbard remain in excellent condition. Although the blade and scabbard show the very beginnings of slight oxidation, they retain strong eye appeal and solid integrity.
