Description
Two important Gerber MkII Prototype test knife handles that were purchased at Al Mar’s auction after he passed. These rare pieces are important for any premium collection of Gerber Mark II’s.
Al Mar played a major role at Gerber Legendary Blades in the 1960’s and early 1970’s, primarily as a designer and product development leader.
Head of Design / Product Development:
After serving as a U.S. Army Special Forces officer, Al Mar joined Gerber and quickly became the driving force behind many of their knife designs. He helped shape the company’s direction during a period when combat and tactical knives were in high demand.
Designing iconic knives:
He refined and expanded Gerber’s lineup, contributing to or influencing models like the Mark II and other tactical blades. His work emphasized practical combat use, ergonomics, and modern materials.
Military and field insight:
Because of his Special Forces background, he brought real-world combat perspective to Gerber’s products—helping ensure their knives were functional, not just decorative.
Brand reputation:
His influence helped solidify Gerber’s reputation in the military and survival knife market during the Vietnam War era.
After leaving Gerber, he founded Al Mar Knives, where he continued designing highly respected knives under his own name.
One of the Mark II handles has its original sample tag still attached! The Roto Finish tag is marked ‘Time: 6 Hours Total’. Second, it is marked ‘Machine: Process B’. Last, the Sample No. is written as ‘2502-2’.
