Description

1 very fine antique Japanese Samurai o-tanto sword with solid Silver fittings.  This beautiful sword would make an important addition to any collection.

This sword has a 15 1/16″ (38.2 cm) nagasa/cutting edge.  The kojiri (saya drag fitting), the matching fuchi/kashira, and the tsuba are all made of Silver.  The fuchi/kashira motif is fu dogs and flowers.  The fuchi/kashira are decorated with fine nanako.

The tsuba is solid Silver.  The Silver kojiri is an ocean waves motif.  The kurikata is very fine with a shakudo oni, and a gold Samurai mon on the underside.  The outer edge of the kurikata is shakudo as well.  Shakudo is an alloy metal containing as much as 10% gold–the deeper the blue color, the higher the gold content percentage.  The kozuka hitsu is a thin strip of gold.  The habaki is covered in gold foil.  The menuki are made of shakudo as well.  The saya lacquer is exceptional–it is a patterned lacquer with abalone flecks.

The unsigned blade has high quality ukibori horimono (blade carving), and two bohi (blade grooves) on each side.  The hamon (temper line) is a gentle notare, a slight waviness.

CONDITION:

The koshirae/mounts are all in exceptional condition.  The saya lacquer is quite nearly perfect.  The blade hamon has some minor scattered carbon staining.  The hamon is somewhat obscured, but is visible along its entire length.  The boshi is complete.
