1 antique Japanese Samurai pole naginata.  If you look for the hard-to-find--this full pole naginata would be an important acquisition.

This samurai naginata is 200-300 years old.  The naginata blade itself is signed.  This naginata was made by Shimohara Hiroshige.  This naginata measures 15 3/4" (40 cm) as measured properly with a tape pulled tight from the tip to the bottom of the notch in the habaki. 

When mounted on the pole, this naginata measures 7 ft. 8.75 in. (235.6 cm).  It's very difficult to find a full pole--U.S. soldiers, sailors, & airmen in the U.S. Occupied Forces typically pulled the naginata off the pole--or sawed off the top portion of the pole so it would fit in their duffle bag.  The bottom half of the pole was usually discarded.  This naginata has its full pole.  

This pole has an exhibit number from when it was in a museum.  The exhibit number '23_' is affixed to the pole about 4" below the habaki.  This pole has excellent fittings.  Please reference the photos for a closer look.  The pole's base fitting is missing--which is the case more often than not with naginata and yari.

This antique Japanese full pole naginata is in excellent condition.  The pole is solid and perfectly straight.  There are absolutely no nicks or chips in the cutting edge.  There was a superficial layer of oxidation on the naginata.  A polisher did a quick removal of the oxidation on one side of the blade to prove/reveal the hamon/temper line.  No openings/ware are visible on the blade.  This signed naginata would polish up beautifully. 

The hamon/temper line is perfectly healthy.  The pole has no cracks.  The blade lacquer is 97-98% present with only a very occasional chip.  The fittings are in excellent condition.   



This rare signed, full pole Japanese Samurai naginata would make an important acquisition for any collection.  This full pole naginata would make an impressive display piece in a home, office, den, or business.
