Picked a loose leather knot for a Japanese WW2 NCO sword in a collection of 70 swords we just bought.  

This Japanese WW2 NCO sword leather knot is in excellent condition.  There is surface crazing on the leather of course--all is solid, and is at no risk of damage.  This knot could be carried in the field today.
