1 fine original U.S. Army model 1880 Hunting Knife. This antique U.S. Army entrenching knife/tool was carried during the U.S. Indian Wars, and is ID'd on the scabbard to the soldier who carried it.
This brass-guard model 1880 is stamped with serial number '1872' on one side. The reverse side is stamped 'U.S. SPRINGFIELD'. This knife measures 13 1/2" overall. The blade itself measures 8 3/8".
The scabbard has a brass fittings. The brass hanger is stamped 'WATERVLIET ARSENAL'. The leather portion of the hanger is also partially stamped '_____VLIET __SENAL'. The soldier who carried this model 1880 scratched his name and Army Company on the back 'J.H. MASON Co.F 21st'.
This antique U.S. Army model 1880 Hunting Knife is in excellent condition. Everything is nice and tight on this knife with no looseness or wiggle. The blade has some occasional carbon finish patina, and only a very occasional area of the lightest of minor pitting. The turned wood handle has a minor chip on the pommel end. The leather scabbard is exceptional for its age. All stitches and rivets are in excellent condition. There is minor crazing of the leather in spots.
