Description

This high-condition U.S. WWII Camillus USMC knife represents a scarce and highly desirable wartime example. Because far fewer USMC-marked knives survived compared to their Navy counterparts, this piece would make a rare addition to any serious military collection.

Compared to the USN Camillus, collectors encounter the USMC version far less often. In fact, the estimated ratio of Marine Corps Mark 2 knives to USN Mark 2 knives stands at approximately 1 to 30, which significantly increases its desirability.

This knife features “U.S.M.C.” stamped on the blade, with “CAMILLUS, N.Y.” on the reverse. Additionally, the knife and sheath display exceptional overall preservation.

The WWII Camillus USMC Mark 2—officially designated the 1219C2 Fighting Utility Knife—earned legendary status among American fighting knives. Beginning in late 1942, Camillus Cutlery Company produced large quantities of these knives for the war effort. Although many collectors casually refer to them as “Ka-Bars,” Camillus actually manufactured the largest number of Mark 2 knives during WWII.

Identification and Markings

Collectors can date wartime production by examining the stamp locations.

Blade-Marked (Early War): From roughly 1942 through mid-1944, Camillus stamped “USMC” on one side of the ricasso and “CAMILLUS, N.Y.” on the other. This knife follows that desirable early-war blade-marked configuration.

Guard-Marked (Late War): Beginning in late 1943 into early 1944, military authorities directed manufacturers to move the markings to the steel crossguard in order to reduce stress on the blade. Consequently, later examples display “USMC” and “CAMILLUS, N.Y.” stamped directly on the guard.

USMC vs. USN Variants

Although the USMC and USN Mark 2 knives share identical physical design, their markings and issued accessories differ.

Scabbards: The Marine Corps typically issued leather scabbards with their knives. In contrast, the Navy often paired its knives with more durable fiberglass or plastic “NORD” scabbards designed specifically for saltwater environments.

CONDITION:

Notably, the blade retains virtually 100% of its original blackened finish. Furthermore, the blade edge remains perfect. Overall, this WWII Camillus USMC knife and sheath present in outstanding high condition and display exceptional collector appeal.
