This Case V-42 comes with its long sheath, which a soldier darkened for night operations. The blade measures 7 3/8 inches, retaining its full original length.
Moreover, the handle and guard remain tight and flawless, with no separation of metal and leather—a condition often seen on V-42s. The knife still has its original factory edges, and the blade retains 99% of its bluing, showing only minimal finish spotting. Importantly, the blade remains untipped, preserving its authenticity.
Historical Significance
This knife belonged to a member of the First Special Service Force. As Frank Trzaska notes in his article “The Case V-42 Stiletto” (KnifeWorld, April 1998), “The U.S. Special Forces (Green Berets) use the V-42 in their Distinctive Insignia, their Unit Crest, and in their shoulder patch.” Consequently, the Case V-42 has become one of the most coveted and classic U.S. fighting knives.
Scabbard Condition
The long scabbard exhibits the soldier’s original darkening for night use—a particularly appealing feature for collectors. The leather remains soft, with minimal surface crazing on the keeper strap. Expected wear, such as small dents above the keeper strap from the pointed skull-crusher pommel and a crease by the leg tie-down rivet, only adds character and authenticity.
