Historical Background
Below is a summarized historical description of the 1918 trench knuckle knife:
The LF&C 1918 (Landers, Frary & Clark) Mark I trench knife originated in 1918 for close-quarters combat during World War I. It features a cast brass knuckle guard and a double-edged blade. Although the design appeared late in WWI, many knives entered military storage and later saw widespread service during World War II. During that period, U.S. Airborne forces and Army Rangers favored these knives for their compact size and effectiveness.
WWII Repurposing & Modifications
WWII Repurposing:
Although designers created the knife for World War I, the U.S. military later issued it to elite units during World War II as a more practical alternative to the standard bayonet.
Airborne Modifications:
During WWII, some airborne veterans modified their LF&C 1918 knives and scabbards for improved comfort and carry. Most commonly, they ground down one side of the brass knuckle guard (the skirt) so the knife would ride closer to the body and avoid pinching when worn on the leg or belt. In addition, some servicemen modified the scabbards by pairing the original 1918 metal scabbard with an M3 leather sheath.
Condition
This original U.S. 1918 Mark I trench knuckle knife remains in exceptional condition.
