1 U.S. World War 2 Case V-42 stiletto.
This Case V-42 has a Barwood M6 sheath. The belt hanger was cut off--typical of airborne troops. The back of the sheath is marked with the name 'Vandenberg'.
This V-42 is interesting in that the soldier who carried it altered the skull crusher pommel. Maybe it dug into his side when carrying it. The pommel is original--the original machining lines, as well as the pommel pin are present. Looks like it he drilled a hole at the very end of the pommel and hammered it flat--an interesting modification.
The blade on this knife measures 6 15/16". The blade was tipped.
The Case V-42 was used by the First Special Service Force. Frank Trzaska notes in his article "The Case V-42 Stiletto" which appeared in the April 1998 edition of KnifeWorld, that "The U.S. Special Forces (Green Berets) use the V-42 in their Distinctive Insignia, their Unit Crest and in their shoulder patch." The Case V-42 is a coveted and classic U.S. fighting knife.
As mentioned above, the blade was tipped. The guard and pommel are nice and tight. The keeper strap is broken on the sheath.
