1 authentic antique Union Civil War model 1860 Light Cavalry sword available. This U.S. Cavalry sword would make an important addition to any office, den, or business; and would make a fine addition to any collection.
This U.S. Cavalry sword was made by Ames of Massachusetts. The blade ricasso is perfectly stamped with the maker's name 'AMES MFG. CO. CHICOPEE MASS.'. The reverse ricasso is stamped 'U.S. G.W.S. 1864'. This Union sword has a leather-covered wood handle. The leather is wrapped with braided brass wire. The sword blade measures 34 1/2" long.
The Phrygian style pommel cap is stamped 'JH'. The scabbard has the braising line running all the way up the side. The scabbard drag is stamped with an inspector's initials.
This vintage Union sword is in very nice condition. The handle's original braided brass wire is in perfect condition. The leather is nearly perfect for its age, showing the appropriate crazing and an occasional minor crack. Everything is nice and tight on this sword. Note that the top of the guard took a heavy blow(s) at some point in its history--the guard is bent back instead of a forward orientation. The brass guard has a nice patina. The original sword pad is present. The blade is almost perfectly straight. The blade has carbon staining, with some pitting towards the point. The brown areas on the blade seen in the photos are just grease.
This sword has seen battle. The blade shows a number of sword strikes.
The scabbard is in excellent functional condition. The scabbard has occasional minor pitting.
This authentic, battle-tested U.S. Civil War Cavalry sword would make an important addition to any collection.
